The Pros and Cons of Praying Mantises in the Garden

in Aug 13, 2024

First let's talk about the: Pros

  1. Natural Pest Control:

    • Predatory Nature: Praying mantises are natural predators of many common garden pests, including aphids, flies, caterpillars, and beetles. Their presence can significantly reduce the need for chemical pesticides.
    • Targeting Harmful Insects: They tend to focus on insects that can cause damage to plants, helping to maintain a healthier garden ecosystem.
  2. Biodiversity:

    • Ecological Balance: Introducing praying mantises can enhance biodiversity, supporting a more balanced ecosystem. This can lead to a healthier and more resilient garden environment.
  3. Low Maintenance:

    • Self-Sustaining: Once introduced, praying mantises require little to no maintenance. They can reproduce and sustain their population without human intervention.
  4. Education and Observation:

    • Learning Opportunities: Praying mantises offer a unique opportunity for gardeners, especially children, to observe and learn about insect behavior and life cycles.

Cons

  1. Non-Selective Predators:

    • Potential Harm to Beneficial Insects: Praying mantises do not discriminate between harmful pests and beneficial insects. They may prey on pollinators like bees and butterflies, which are crucial for plant pollination.
  2. Cannibalistic Behavior:

    • Intraspecies Predation: Praying mantises are known for their cannibalistic tendencies, particularly during mating. This can lead to a reduction in their population over time.
  3. Limited Pest Control:

    • Population Density: The effectiveness of praying mantises in controlling pests depends on their population density. If their numbers are too low, they may not significantly impact pest populations.
  4. Seasonal Presence:

    • Lifecycle Constraints: Praying mantises have a seasonal lifecycle. They are most active during the warmer months and may not provide year-round pest control.

Conclusion

Introducing praying mantises to your garden can offer several benefits, particularly in terms of natural pest control and promoting biodiversity. However, their non-selective predation and seasonal activity can pose challenges. Considering both the pros and cons can help you make an informed decision about whether these fascinating insects are right for your garden. Me personally I've been urban gardening in my back yard since 2013 and I've never seen one until this year 2024 and I've done fine, so I wouldn't go out and purchase them. I feel it may upset the flow of nature and I don't want them killing all the good pollinators etc, but I will not touch this one while he's benefitting my garden, but if I see that he's do more harm than good, he will have to go, and that's my observation.

Happy Gardening.
