There are certain things in nature that don’t just catch your eye…
they hold your attention. The cowrie shell is one of them. Smooth. Grounded. Quietly powerful. It’s not loud in its beauty—and it doesn’t have to be.
Long before it became a design element in modern jewelry, the cowrie shell carried value, meaning, and presence.
Across parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, cowrie shells were once used as currency, traded across regions and held as symbols of wealth and exchange. But beyond commerce, they were worn, carried, and kept close for something deeper.
They were protective.
They were sacred.
They were alive with meaning.
Adornment, in these traditions, was never just about appearance—it was about identity, energy, and intention.
The Spiritual Essence of the Cowrie
There’s a reason this shell continues to show up in spiritual and ancestral practices. The shape itself—soft, curved, almost womb-like—has long been associated with:
- Feminine energy
- Fertility and creation
- Protection from negative energy
- Prosperity and abundance
Cowrie shells were worn to guard the spirit, especially for women and children. They were placed with purpose, worn with meaning and passed down with intention. They were often sewn into garments, braided into hair, and placed intentionally on the body.
Why I’m Drawn to Them
There’s something about working with cowrie shells that feels.... grounded, not just as a decoration—but also as protection and power. Even today, many still feel that quiet pull when they hold one.
When I sit down to create, sorting beads, touching each shell, choosing where it belongs—it doesn’t feel rushed. It feels intentional.
Each piece of jewelry I make whether its a pair of earrings, an anklet, a necklace, a piece of hair candy or even a beautiful waistbead, it carries that same energy: It never feels rushed.
- Natural
- Unforced
- Rooted in something deeper than trend
No two shells are identical. No two pieces feel exactly the same and I honor that.
Adornment with intention
In a world where everything moves fast, there’s something meaningful about wearing pieces that feel connected.
Connected to:
- the earth
- history
- craftsmanship artistry
- and your own personal expression
Cowrie shells remind us that beauty doesn’t have to be complicated.
Sometimes it’s already been created—perfectly—by nature.
A Gentle Invitation
If you’re someone who appreciates natural elements, grounded beauty, and pieces that carry a quiet presence…
I’ve created a growing collection of handmade pieces using cowrie shells, seed beads, and other natural materials.
Each pair is made slowly, intentionally, and with care.
If one speaks to you, you’re welcome to explore them.
No rush. Just take your time.
Some things aren’t just worn.
They’re felt.
The cowrie shell is one of them.
And I like it that way.
