What I learned about ‘aggressive’ bees—and what was really going on
I’m out back, minding my business, doing what I love—
Mixing soil, working with my plants, building life from the ground up and getting my hand dirty--the good kind.
And all of a sudden out of nowhere…
🐝 Buzz.
🐝 Buzz.
🐝 Buzz.
Not one. Not two.
Multiple big, loud bees flying straight toward me.
Now let me be clear—
I respect nature. I don’t bother bees. They don’t bother me.
But this?
This felt different.
I thought I was being attacked... like I was getting run out of my own backyard.
“And I'm like this feels PERSONAL?”
So now I'm in strategy mode.
Because I had already tried everything:
- Neem spray
- Soapy water
- Even alcohol (don’t judge me, I was in survival mode 😄)
And guess what?
👉 They kept coming back.
At that point I said:
“Okay… I need a strategy.”
So I did what we all do now yall
I hit up ChatGPT.
I'm not playing.
I want my yard back smh.
BUT What I thought was happening vs. what was really happening was 2 different things:
I thought:
- The bees were aggressive
- Maybe there was a nest nearby
- Maybe I disturbed something
But what I learned?
I was wrong
They weren’t attacking me at all.
What was REALLY happening
Those weren’t “angry bees”…
They were bumblebees doing their job.
And me?
I accidentally created a five-star buffet in the middle of my backyard.
Let me break it down for you.
I had:
- All this open soil, out here mixing stuff
- Moist organic material
- Pots, plant matter, and residue, sugar, flowers
- Active mixing (which is releasing all these scents into the air)
To us, that’s gardening.
To them?
That’s:
“Fresh nutrients. Moisture. Minerals. sugars. FOOD and they thinking GO time.”
🐝 Why they kept flying toward me
They weren’t chasing me…
👉 They were flying toward the resource
…and I was standing right in the middle of it.
So every time I moved, every time I stirred something, or mixed some soil:
I was basically saying:
“Hey y’all… food is ready.”
So yes… I WAS the problem
Not gonna lie—
once I understood that, I had to laugh about the whole darn thing:
Because here I am:
- Spraying
- Dodging
- Acting like I’m under attack
- running out with my dogs and running them back inside
Meanwhile the bees are like:
“Ma’am… we’re just trying to eat.”
So now the strategy and what actually worked (and gave me my peace back)
I had to shift my approach and everything seems to be changing. I hope
✔️ 1. I stopped spraying them
That was only making things chaotic.
✔️ 2. I covered my soil when not using it
No more constant scent signal.
✔️ 3. I cleaned my work surface
Removed leftover soil + organic residue, cleaned my table and bench surfaces
✔️ 4. I worked with intention
Open → use → close
Not leave everything exposed
✔️ 5. (And the Game changer) I created a decoy zone
I took my big old compost container and pushed it away from my patio, back toward the fence.
👉 And guess what?
They over there now and leaving me alone. They followed the resource
The lesson (and it’s deeper than bees),
This ain't just about bees.
This is about:
Understanding the environment you’re working in
When you work with:
- Plants
- Herbs
- Soil
- Natural elements
You are part of a living system
Youre not separate from it.
My Final Thoughts
So no…
The bees didn’t kick me out my backyard.
I just didn’t realize I had set the table for them.
Once I adjusted, we found balance again. Now I'm not saying they won't be back to visit, I've got a whole fiesta of food growing around me, and definately need them to keep on pollinating, but now they've got their space ... and I've got mine.
And In Closing: I just wanna say
Sometimes the lesson isn’t to fight nature…
It’s to understand it.
So until we meet again on the next video
I wish you Love and Light! Happy Gardening. Peace!
