Flaxseed gel has become a favorite among those who prefer botanical hair care. When formulated correctly, it provides hydration, definition, and light hold without the stiffness or buildup that many commercial gels can leave behind.
In this tutorial, I created a preserved flaxseed gel designed for both locs and natural hair. The goal of this formula is to create a smooth, hydrating gel that offers light structure and flexibility while supporting scalp health.
Unlike many homemade flaxseed gels that must be used immediately, this version includes a preservative to help extend its shelf life and improve stability.
Flaxseeds naturally produce a mucilage when heated in water. This creates a gel-like texture that provides slip and hold while helping to retain moisture in the hair.
For this formulation, I combined flaxseed with a few additional botanicals to enhance performance.
Key ingredients include:
Flax Seeds
Provide natural hold and hydration.
Fenugreek Seeds
Rich in proteins and nutrients that support healthy hair.
Marshmallow Root
Adds extra slip and conditioning.
Aloe Vera & Glycerin
Help draw moisture into the hair and keep the gel hydrating.
Traditional flaxseed gel spoils quickly because it is water-based and contains plant materials. To improve the shelf life, I incorporated:
• Xanthan gum and gum arabic to improve texture and stability
• Optiphen Plus as a preservative
• Essential oils for light fragrance and scalp support
This allows the gel to remain usable longer while still maintaining a botanical formulation style.
Once the gel was finished, I tested the texture by applying a small amount to my fingers.
The final consistency was smooth and hydrated — not sticky, snotty and definitely not slimy, which can sometimes happen with flaxseed gels that are not properly balanced.
The majority of the gel was poured into an 8-ounce bottle, with a small amount left over for immediate use.
30 Day Stability Test
Because natural formulations can change over time, I will be monitoring this batch for the next 30 days to evaluate:
• Stability
• Texture changes
• Preservation performance
• Overall usability
I will share the results in an upcoming update.
