This season has been a real learning experience for me. Between the blistering heat, heavy rain, and getting my watering system together later than planned, a lot of my plants struggled and some surprised me.
So I’m doing what gardeners do — adjusting, replanting, and trying again.
I started another round of seeds for my Zone 8 garden, including warm-season crops and fall garden starts. Some of the seeds I’m working with include cucumbers, corn, carrots, broccoli, kale, cabbage, collards, mustard/tatsoi, radishes, strawberries, marigolds, borage, basil, and other herbs and flowers.
I’m also working on transplants, cuttings, and propagation around the garden. So far I’ve been working with blackberry, chasteberry, crepe myrtle, basil cuttings, Confederate jasmine, blueberry cuttings, and I’m getting ready to transplant dandelion.
This is not a perfect garden. It’s a big learning garden.
Some things are thriving. Some things are being restarted. Some things are teaching me patience. But every season gives me more notes, more experience, and more respect for growing in pots and grow bags, and other small spaces.
Zone 8 July planting is definitely possible — you just have to pay attention to the heat, water, shade, and it's all about timing.
